Alfred Kordelin
Foundation's annual grants were
given 6.11.2002. The total sum of grants was
1 530 000 euros plus 500 000 euros for great
cultural projects. Finnish jazz got its share,
too. Pianists, composer Kari Ikonen received
4000 euros for the acquisition of grand piano.
Pentti Ronkanen got 3000 euros for maintaining
and improving Suomijazz website.

Erik Lindström Foundation has been established,
to function in close contact with Finnish Jazz &
Pop Archive. Seed money comes from Erik
Lindström himself, one of the most important
pioneers of Finnish jazz. Foundation
supports especially the studies of young
Finnish jazz musicians abroad.

this time in 24th Jazz Hoeilaart
International Jazz
Contest in Belgium. Standings were:

The finals of the Jazz Hoeilaart International
Jazz
Contest were organized at the Community Centre
"De Bosuil" in Jezus-Eik (Overijse) on Saturday
28th and Sunday 29th September 2002. VRT
Radio Klara recorded the whole contest for
transmission at a later date and the publication of
the cd Jazz Hoeilaart 2002.
The organizers received 62 inscriptions
from 16
different countries.

Composer, pianist Kari Ikonen won an
international
competition for jazz composers, "ScrivereInJazz
2002", organized in Sardinia. 45 composers from
Europe and America took part in the contest.
Kari Ikonen has graduated from the jazz
department of Sibelius Academy, and works there
as a teacher. This is not the first international
victory for Ikonen: in 2000 he won Julius Hemphill
-competition in USA.

MP4, led by trumpeter Mikko Pettinen, won an
international jazz group contest in Getxo, Spain.
MP4 was elected the best group both by the jury and
the audience. Pettinen won also the prize of best
soloist in both categories.
Other finalists were Refleks from Denmark,
Underton and L14,16, both from Germany.

Finnish Ilmiliekki Quartet
won the final of
Young Nordic Jazz Comets -competition, held in
Helsinki. Six groups played in the final,
representing all Scandinavian countries.
The musicians in Ilmiliekki Quartet are
Verneri
Pohjola (tp), Tuomo Prättälä (p), Antti Lötjönen
(b)
and Olavi Louhivuori (dr).
Danish guitarist Jakob Bro won the prize
for the
best soloist.

UMO Jazz Orchestra. Saarela is best known for her
eight year period in charge of Tampere music

from Jyväskylä has received honorary
award from the musicians of Central Finland.
Besides teaching, Heermann plays now in
some eight groups, for example in Marian
Petrescu Band and Otra Vez, one of the best

Georgie-award 2001 by Finnish Jazz Federation.

Contest. Second prize was divided to Jussi Kannaste

jazz group contest in Avignon, France. Finnish pianist

Lars Gullin -prize. This Swedish prize is given
annually to a Scandinavian jazz musician.

Saxophonist and composer Pepa Päivinen
is the Finnish jazz musician of the year.
Pepa received the Finnish Jazz Federation's
annual Georgie Award at the National Jazz
Meeting in Helsinki.
Pepa is best known for his work with
Edward Vesala Sound & Fury, UMO Jazz
Orchestra and Saxperiment.
At the moment Pepa has one of the best
jazz trios out anywhere with bassplayer
Hannu Rantanen and drummer Mikko
Hassinen.

Kari Ikonen (b. 1973) has won the international
Julius Hemphill Composition Award. The
contest is organized by The Jazz Composers
Alliance in Massachusetts, USA. The winning
big band -composition 'Luoto' is to be played in
Boston in February 2001.
Ikonen has studied in Jyväskylä, Rotterdam and
Helsinki (Sibelius Academy). At the moment Kari
Ikonen plays piano and keyboards in groups
Karikko, Quartet Coyote, Mr Fonebone, Ahava
and Gnomus.

experimental music in general, is gaining strength.
The club now has a backing organization with many

jazz, will perform in New York's Carnegie Hall on 6th
of June. Sarpila will play with Swedish musicians Arne

Before Carnegie this concert will also be played in
Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö.

anniversary. UMO gives a series of concerts
based on new music by Finnish composers.

UMO will also play new music with symphony

Drummer, leader and composer Edward
Vesala is dead.
Vesala was perhaps the best known
Finnish jazz musician internationally.
Breakthrough came with his trio with Jan
Garbarek and Arild Andersen in the early
seventies. In the late 70's Vesala worked
in a remarkable quartet with Tomasz
Stanko.
Most mature works Vesala ever produced
on record were however those of his own
group Sound & Fury. 80's were a great
decade for the band and Vesala as
their leader and composer. Vesala's highly
individual works are among the most
important jazz recordings of the decade.

has been released in November. Musicians on
the record are Järvelä (sax), Samuli Mikkonen
(p, synt), Jarmo Saari (g), Lasse Lindgren (b)

Finnish jazz scene celebrates the 60th
anniversary of the great saxophonist Pekka Pöyry
(1939-80). Pöyry is remembered in Savoy Theatre
concert in Helsinki on 10th of December by old
colleagues and younger jazz generation.
Performers at the concert are Umo Jazz Orchestra
with guests Junnu Aaltonen, Eero Koivistoinen and
Jukka Tolonen, Otto Donner Band, Trio Nueva
Finlandia, Claes Anderson-Reiska Laine Band and

organizing 14-16 concerts of Finnish top jazz bands

Finnish Jazz & Pop Archive releases the newest volume
of their record series concentrating in Finnish jazz of
the past decades.
Volume 7 is called "Julkaisemattomat - Unreleased
Sessions 1956-64". There will be a jam session to
celebrate the record in Storyville, Helsinki on 23.9.
at 10 pm.

The leading Finnish big band UMO Jazz Orchestra tours
abroad this autumn. Following concerts confirmed:
Dublin Jazz Week 26.9., Paris 30.9., Berlin 6.11. and
Madrid at the end of November.

French jazz group Kartet is working in Jyväskylä for two
weeks in 31.8.-15.9. Kartet trains the pupils and the teachers
of Jyväskylän Music Academy. The band also gives a concert
in JMA's Siltasali on 15.9.

The winner of the 4th Lady Summertime -contest (quite right,
for Finnish female jazz vocalists) is Sofia Finnilä. Ewa Kaarela
and Johanna Mäki were next.

English trumpeter Kenny Wheeler works with
Jan Simons Band at the end of September in Helsinki.
After a two-day recording session Wheeler and the
Finns give a concert at Tavastia-klubi on 22.9.

Saxophonist and flutist Janne Murto, 34 , has been elected
the new headmaster of Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki.
Murto will serve a 4-year period starting from the beginning
of the year 2000. Murto follows the retiring headmaster
Klaus Järvinen, who has lead the school from the beginning
in 1972.

(held in Runnin Rapujatsit -festival, Iisalmi) are
Rose Marie Backström, Sofia Finnilä, Ewa Kaarela,

information on Finnish contemporary music, folk and world

financial support. Finnish Music Library Association gives
Pentti Ronkanen, the editor of the pages, 7500 FIM to

Lenni-Kalle Taipale Trio has received the first ever gold record
in the Finnish jazz music. Nothing to hide, released on Naxos, has
sold more than 20 000 copies.

UMO's trumpetist and concert master Esko Heikkinen is the
Finnish representative in EBU jazz orchestra performing in
Canada. EBU orchestra will celebrate Duke Ellington's 100th
birthday with concerts in Montreal on 29.4. and Quebec on

A new jazz club in Oulu, organized by Jazz 20 ry, starts

Thursday 29.4. with the concert of fusion group Cloud Nine.

Äänekoski Jazz Federation has received a grant of
40 000 FIM from Finnish Culture Foundation
(=Suomen kulttuurirahasto) to be used on the
presentation of Scandinavian jazz. Next
Keitelejazz
Festival 22.-25.7. presents Swedish top
groups, in 2000 Norwegian jazz has it's turn and
finally in 2001 it's time for Danish jazz.
The programme of next Keitelejazz with the
Swedes will be published in April.

Rantajatsit, a high-quality
festival in Raahe, have
renewed the www-pages of the festival. The programme
of the next festival will be released on the pages. At this
stage Raahe has confirmed the concert of Louis Sclavis,
one of the most important figures in modern French jazz.

A new organization to promote live jazz works now in
the town of Rovaniemi in Northern Finland. "Jaskan
Kaverit" is going to organize at least five concerts

Groove FM , a new capital city region radio station
concentrating in jazz, soul, funk, blues and latin is to be
launched on 7.1.1999.

Piano player, composer Iiro Rantala was awarded with
the culture prize of Sipoo municipality. Rantala is best
known for his work with Trio Töykeät. Rantala is also the
artistic manager of Kalkkiranta Jazz, a small festival
organized annually in Sipoo.

Pianist Lenni-Kalle Taipale is the winner of 20 000 FIM
worth art prize given annually by the town of Espoo.
Taipale is said to be like his home town: young, talented
and still in the beginning of his career.

Trumpetist Esko Heikkinen has won the annual Georgie
Award, given to the jazz musician of the year. Besides a
musician, Heikkinen is also active in the fields of composing,
arranging and conducting.
Heikkinen is best known for his work in the UMO Jazz
Orchestra. At the moment he is the lead-trumpetist of this
'national' big band.

Kalevi Viitamäki (as, violin) was the winner of the Louis
Armstrong -prize this year. Viitamäki was awarded for his work
in the classic jazz field.

Trio Töykeät tours in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in
November. The tour started from Hamburg and last of the 13
club concerts will be in Wien on 23th of November.

Jazz Bar was awarded by the Arts Council of Central Finland
for their work in keeping up the jazz spirits in the town of
Jyväskylä. The prize was scupltor Arja Jäppinen's statue
'The Violinist' . 6-year-old Jazz Bar is important also nationally,
as it is one of the few clubs to have live jazz all through the
year.
